The Trans Mountain pipeline may be stalled again–but Trudeau is worried about “gender imbalance” in the energy sector

By Jonathon Van Maren

In the wake of nearly non-stop setbacks on the economic front culminating in the purchase of a 4.5 billion dollar pipeline that a federal court just told Trudeau he couldn’t build, you can hardly blame the Liberals for wanting to set some priorities in order to remind people why they cast their ballot for the Grits in the first place. And indeed, this week the Government of Canada sent out a press release, announcing that our prime minister intends to turn his full attention to the energy industry:

September 5, 2018 – Toronto – Natural Resources Canada

Canada’s Prime Minister, the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, has made gender equality a priority for Canada’s G7 Presidency, dedicating one of five main themes to Advancing Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment.

Canada’s energy industry remains gender-imbalanced, with women making up just 24 percent of the workforce. Women’s representation in clean energy is only slightly higher at 25 percent. The Government of Canada is committed to addressing the gender imbalance in our energy sector…

Canada will continue to make gender equality in the energy sector a priority through initiatives such as the Women in Cleantech Challenge and internationally with the launch of the Equal by 30 Campaign at the 2018 Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM).

Yeah, you read that right. With Canadians from coast to coast revolting against Trudeau’ national carbon plan, Western alienation setting in right on schedule, and the Liberal policy of “social license” in tatters, Trudeau wants to talk about how many of the dwindling jobs that are left in the energy sector are staffed by women. I’m sure energy sector workers are relieved that despite the fact that the Liberal government has made it nearly impossible for Alberta to get her oil to market, Trudeau has drilled down to the core of the issue.
