Justin Trudeau pushes for more abortions (and other stories)

A roundup of news and commentary from around the interwebs.

Interestingly, Andrew Sullivan, a Joe Biden fan and long-time gay activist and self-described Catholic, criticized Biden’s position on abortion recently on his interesting Substack:

On abortion, the taking of life from the most vulnerable human beings in the world, the unborn, Biden has also shifted in ways he has never really explained. It is possible, I believe, for a Catholic to defend the right to abortion in a free and pluralist society, especially given that it occurs inside a woman’s body, while lamenting that abortion takes place at all, and speaking candidly about its intrinsic moral evil. But Biden has never even gone so far as Bill Clinton’s view that abortion should be “safe, legal and rare.” It is also possible to allow its legality without having the government actively fund it, which was Biden’s position only a couple of years ago, and which he has now reversed. He explains this by saying that it will help the poor get abortions — which is an admirable concern for the poor, but not, exactly, for the unborn.

Sullivan is one of the activists most responsible for mainstreaming the idea of same sex marriage in the United States, and recently had a discussion with the also-reluctantly-pro-choice Caitlin Flanagan of The Atlantic on why abortion should be legal, so I was surprised to see this welcome criticism.

Like many conservatives, I’ve been reading David French for years. I still do read him, and often find him level-headed, insightful, and a necessary counterbalance to much of mainstream conservative commentary. Unfortunately, however, he seems to be following his audience somewhat—I’ve seen columns where he combines legitimate critiques of the pro-life movement, for example, with mischaracterizations, and he now seems to have carved out a fulltime job unloading on those he once would have considered his primary audience. Again, much of it is well-earned criticism—but some of it is not. This piece by Owen Strachan characterizes French as someone who “wins a big audience saying what cultural elites want professing evangelicals to say about conservative evangelicals.” I don’t agree with everything he says, but his points—especially his first one, which I’ve written about multiple times—are worth considering.

The Tokyo Olympics, which is a festival of kowtowing to Beijing, opened with John Lennon’s “Imagine,” one of the worst songs in pop history—albeit one that symbolizes our godless age. Consider the opening lyrics: “Imagine there’s no heaven / It’s easy if you try / No hell below us, above us only sky / Imagine all the people livin’ for today.”

We’re getting a taste of what that world looks like. It’s nothing like John Lennon imagined.

Of course, one of the key stories that mainstream media outlets are keen to promote is the presence of transgender athletes at the Olympics, smashing new barriers. As the coverage from NBC indicates, this is invariably presented in contrast with the so-called “anti-trans” laws passing in the United States.

Justin Trudeau, Canada’s most radically pro-abortion prime minister, is withholding healthcare funding to the province of New Brunswick because the provincial government is declining to fund a private abortion clinic in Moncton. Abortions can be procured (paid for by the taxpayer) at three hospitals, but this is not enough for the Trudeau government.

Again, we’ve been told repeatedly that the New Brunswick abortion clinic is on the verge of closing yet it never actually happens. What gives? Where’s the rest of the story?
